Baby Signs

I think I am going to start teaching baby M sign language. She is 6 months old. I know it will take some time for her to pick it up, but once she does, how cool will that be? She will be able to tell me what she wants! I can't wait! This post is less informational, and more of a way for me to ask all of you for advice! When did you start teaching your baby sign language? How did you do it? What tools did you use? Did you decide not to do it? Why? How old was your little one when they did their first sign?

I asked for some advice on my facebook page and I purchased the "Baby Signing Time Volume 1" DVD. Has anyone used this? I have watched it once with baby M. I plan to use this as a tool to teach myself and to entertain her and help to teach her. But, I also plan to use the signs in our every day life as well.
Wish me luck! If she likes this DVD, I may just get the whole set.

We started signing with J at 6 or 7 months. We had a book and accompanying DVD. We learned basic signs that we used on an everyday basis (eat, diaper, more, drink, water, dog, sit, book, all done, etc.) ane we would just sign/narrate everything we did. Eventually, he started picking it up. I think his first sign was "eat". As he began to talk more, he slowly stopped with the signing. But it was nice to kind of know what he was wanting before he could actully talk. Good luck :)

I can't remember when exactly we started signing with Lily but I do know she was quite young and picked it up surprisingly fast. We used the Signing Time series at the recommendation of her speech therapist and have loved them all from Baby Signs to the ones aimed at toddlers. We also used flashcards to practice, which she still loves, and just application of signing as you narrate your day.
Signing Time is actually on locally (PBS or KUED) too so we've got a dozen episodes or so Tivo'd. Lily still asks us to watch it fairly frequently. They've also got a big selection at the library!
We are also planning on starting all over at the basics when Melissa comes home, since she will know no English!

I used Baby Signing Time with our oldest son who was born premature 1 lb 3 oz. We knew he would have some delays so we started right away. It helped him SO much! Especially when he was hungry or thirsty, he could tell us without having a melt down. Now he is five and in kindergarten without delays. We are using it with our newest preemie son ;) It was on PBS at the time but is no longer on :( One of your readers suggested the library - no matter where we have lived our libraries have always had a few copies and the cds also. Check them out and find one that your daughter likes.
